The 5 hour drive from San Diego was a desolate one. Once we passed through the same mountain range we came in through, it was straight desert until Las Vegas. The sun was unrelenting the whole drive, and we were relieved to relax in the AC upon arriving at our friend Kate's house, just outside the city. She told us it was a particularly cool day, and they had just been through an entire week of 120-degree scorchers.
Housing developments in Las Vegas are very interesting. Each realty company seems to be undercutting the others. “Four bedroom, three bath, $120,000” reads one sign. “1500 sq. ft, $100,000” reads another, and so on. Apparently people are snatching up this cheap real estate, because all of the housing developments seemed to be under major construction.
We were surprised and delighted to find a vegan restaurant just outside the strip, but unfortunately Las Vegas has some serious problems with GPS navigation. We spent an hour trying to find the restaurant on a street which was spread out in small chunks across the city, with no apparent rhyme or reason to the address numberings. We finally found the place and enjoyed some excellent Chinese fake meat dishes.
Our next stop was Las Vegas Blvd, also known as The Strip. What first met us after exiting the parking house was a drunk couple teaching Andrew how to hold his girlfriend and who gave Jon the name Steve.

There were not many people though, since we hit Las Vegas on a Sunday. Walking down The Strip, on our way to the cheapest casino, offering $1 Black Jack, there were several boxes with free magazines offering prostitutes of any kind. Las Vegas is indeed the city of sin, which didn't come as a surprise for any of us, but experiencing it first hand is a strange feeling, with an impression of despair and people exploiting the less strong.
