We passed through several small towns in Utah on the way to Denver. In one particularly small town we stopped at a gas station with a convenience store, a very regular occurrence on our road trip. A car full of French tourists was also fueling up, and they noticed our license plate.
“Massachusetts! Is very far from here, yes?”
“Yes. Do you know Boston?”
“Aaaahhh! Bos-tohn! Larry Bird – basketball – yes!”
This cracked us up. They took a picture of our (filthy) car and exotic license plate, thoroughly enjoying the slogan “The Spirit of America.” Perhaps we'll be showing up on a French road trip blog somewhere.
In the store, we found another source of great amusement. The picture says it all here. Again, keep in mind we found this in small-town Utah!
This brewery (we checked, and the beer is actually brewed in Utah) had another hilarious beer, the Evolution Ale. It read “Darwin Approved” and “Created in 27 days, not 7.” Fantastic.
The drive to Denver was a long and difficult one. We could see the dark outlines of mountains as we drove by, but unfortunately missed out on most of the scenery. The roads were pitch-black and had sharp turns, which was especially unnerving given the ubiquitous deer caution signs. But we finally arrived, exhausted, at 5AM. Trader Joe's chocolate-covered coffee beans and Monster energy drink did the trick for the long drive.
After resting up, we set out to enjoy our afternoon in Colorado. We visited Red Rocks, home of a beautiful park and an amphitheater which overlooks downtown Denver. We brought our rock climbing shoes, but they stayed in the bag...
Red Rocks has been hosting concerts since the early 1940s and has seen the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Pearl Jam, Daft Punk and Sigur Ros, among others. While we didn't catch a show, we were treated to a few bands' sound checks before the venue was closed to the public.
We also stopped at Tipsy's Liquor World, a store reminiscent of our beloved Julio's Liquors back East. They had a fantastic selection of beers, both local and imported, and decided on a few brews from New Belgian and Fort Collins Brewery, as well as a Mikkeller Jackie Brown as a thank-you gift for our host, Chris.

We enjoyed some dinner at the Rock Bottom brewery (if you visit, try the Milk Stout), then returned home to plan the trip back East.
